Sports mouthguards — when and which type

Any contact or high-impact sport from age 6 needs a mouthguard. Custom fits protect best.

The American Dental Association lists 29 sports where mouthguards prevent tooth injuries — including basketball, soccer and skateboarding, not just football and boxing. Boil-and-bite guards from a sports store are better than nothing. A custom-fitted guard from your pediatric dentist ($40–$150) fits over braces and is 2–3x more protective.
