Xylitol gum and mints — do they work?

Yes — the evidence for xylitol reducing cavity-causing bacteria is strong.

Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that bacteria can't metabolize. Chewing xylitol gum 3–5 times a day for 5+ minutes reduces Streptococcus mutans levels. Best for children 6+ who can safely chew gum. Look for products where xylitol is the first ingredient, aim for 5–10 grams total per day. Note: xylitol is toxic to dogs — store safely.
